Built-In Wardrobes Dubai: What They Cost and When to Choose Them
Built-in wardrobes in Dubai are custom-made to fit the exact dimensions of a room, alcove, or wall — unlike freestanding units, which compromise on height, width, or both. In Dubai villa and apartment bedrooms, built-in wardrobes are the standard specification at the mid-range and above because ceiling heights of 280cm to 320cm make freestanding furniture look undersized and leave wasted space above. This guide covers pricing, materials, door types, and when a fitted wardrobe makes more sense than a full walk-in closet.
What built-in wardrobes cost in Dubai. Fitted wardrobes in Dubai are priced by linear meter. Budget-tier fitted wardrobes (standard MDF or chipboard with basic fittings): AED 1,000 to AED 1,500 per linear meter. This price range typically involves imported flatpack components finished and assembled on site. Quality is inconsistent and moisture-resistance specifications vary — verify carefully before committing. Mid-range fitted wardrobes (moisture-resistant MDF carcass, melamine finish, Blum hardware, standard internal fittings): AED 1,800 to AED 3,000 per linear meter. This is the correct tier for Dubai apartments and villas where the wardrobe will see daily use for 10 or more years. Premium fitted wardrobes (moisture-resistant MDF, lacquer or veneer finish, full internal configuration with drawers, pull-outs, and integrated LED): AED 3,200 to AED 6,000 per linear meter. For reference: a 3-metre bedroom alcove wardrobe in mid-range melamine runs AED 7,000 to AED 12,000 including installation. A 4-metre floor-to-ceiling fitted wardrobe with sliding doors and lacquer finish runs AED 18,000 to AED 28,000. Sliding doors vs hinged doors: which is right for Dubai apartments. In apartments where bedroom floor space is 12 to 20 sqm, sliding doors are usually the better choice because they do not require swing clearance. A hinged door on a 600mm-deep wardrobe needs 600mm of clearance in front of it to open fully. In a room where the wardrobe faces the bed, that clearance often does not exist without moving the bed. Sliding doors eliminate this constraint. The trade-off is that sliding wardrobes give access to only one half of the interior at a time, which matters if the wardrobe is used by two people simultaneously. In villa master bedrooms and dressing rooms with more floor space, hinged doors are preferred because they reveal the full interior and look more substantial when open. Sliding door systems in Dubai typically add AED 400 to AED 900 per door panel to the wardrobe price depending on the track quality and glass or mirror insert specification. When to choose a fitted wardrobe instead of a walk-in closet. A walk-in closet requires a dedicated room or a section of a room partitioned off, with a minimum usable width of 150cm to allow comfortable circulation between hanging sections. In Dubai apartments, this is often not achievable without sacrificing bedroom floor space significantly. A fitted wardrobe along one wall provides equivalent linear meter capacity in a fraction of the footprint. The trade-off is the experience: a walk-in provides a dressing room environment, while a fitted wardrobe is a storage wall. For villa master suites with a dedicated dressing area (5m x 4m or larger), a walk-in closet is typically the better investment. For apartments and secondary bedrooms in villas, fitted wardrobes deliver the same storage capacity per AED spent. Our dressing room guide compares both configurations with layout diagrams.
Materials for Dubai's humidity. The carcass material matters more in Dubai than in most markets because relative humidity in summer months (May to September) regularly exceeds 80%. Standard MDF expands and warps at this humidity level; the edge banding lifts and the board swells at joints. Moisture-resistant MDF (green core) is rated to 85% relative humidity and is the correct specification for any fitted wardrobe in Dubai. Chipboard with melamine laminate is cheaper and acceptable in consistently air-conditioned environments, but is not suitable for rooms that are closed without AC during the summer. Lacquer-finished wardrobes require a spray-applied topcoat over moisture-resistant MDF; the lacquer itself provides a sealed surface that handles moisture well, but the carcass material beneath still needs to be the moisture-resistant grade. The best wardrobe companies in Dubai will specify this without being asked; if a quotation does not mention moisture-resistant carcass material, ask explicitly. See our full wardrobe materials guide for a comparison of MDF, lacquer, veneer, and melamine by durability and humidity performance.
Internal fittings: how to specify storage that actually works. The most common mistake in fitted wardrobe design is allocating too much hanging space and too little shelf and drawer space. A practical breakdown for a Dubai adult wardrobe: 50% hanging (split between short-hang for jackets, shirts, and folded trousers, and long-hang for abayas, thobes, and dresses), 25% shelving (shoes, folded items, bags), and 25% drawers (underwear, accessories, folded t-shirts). In practice, built-in drawer units are often omitted to save cost and then regretted after installation. Adding a 3-drawer unit to a wardrobe costs AED 800 to AED 1,800 at manufacturing stage; retrofitting one after installation is significantly more complex and expensive. Pull-out shoe racks (AED 300 to AED 600 each), trouser hangers (AED 250 to AED 450 each), and valet rods (AED 150 to AED 300 each) are best specified before manufacturing. Each of these requires a specific cabinet module width and depth to function correctly.
Dubai property types and wardrobe specifications. Apartments in Downtown Dubai, JVC, and Business Bay typically have master bedrooms of 14 to 20 sqm with one or two alcoves suited to fitted wardrobes of 3 to 5 linear meters. Dubai Hills and Arabian Ranches villas have master suites of 25 to 40 sqm, where a fitted wardrobe serves secondary bedrooms and the master gets a full walk-in closet or dressing room. Palm Jumeirah and Emirates Hills properties often have dedicated dressing room spaces adjacent to the master that accommodate U-shaped walk-in configurations. Knowing the community and property type helps narrow the specification quickly. We design and install fitted wardrobes across all Dubai communities and can advise on the right configuration for your property type and bedroom dimensions.
