IKEA PAX vs Custom Wardrobe in Dubai: Honest Comparison

We could write an article that trashes IKEA and promotes custom wardrobes exclusively. But that would not be honest, and you would see through it. IKEA PAX is a genuinely good product in the right context. Custom wardrobes are better in other contexts. Here is how to decide.

Choose IKEA PAX when: you are renting and your lease is under 2 years, you need a wardrobe immediately (PAX is in stock, custom takes 3-5 weeks), your budget is under AED 3,000, the wardrobe is for a guest room that gets minimal daily use, or you are fitting out a property for short-term rental (Airbnb) where durability is less important than cost.

Choose custom when: you own the property, you plan to stay 3+ years, the wall dimensions do not match standard IKEA sizes (very common in Dubai), you want a seamless floor-to-ceiling look with no gaps, you are in a humid area (coastal, ground floor, near pool), the wardrobe is for your master bedroom where you interact with it twice daily, or you want internal layout customized to your specific belongings.

Price reality check (3 linear meters, standard bedroom): IKEA PAX frame + doors + interiors: AED 3,000-6,000. You assemble it yourself (4-6 hours) or pay AED 200-500 for assembly. It will have 30-50mm gaps at the ceiling and 5-20mm gaps at the sides. Custom MDF with melamine, moisture-resistant, professional installation: AED 6,000-10,000. Zero gaps. Humidity-proof. Professional-grade hardware.

Durability in Dubai: IKEA PAX uses particleboard which absorbs moisture. In air-conditioned Dubai apartments, it performs adequately for 3-5 years. In ground-floor villas, near pools, or in coastal areas, panels can visibly swell within 1-2 years. The hardware (Komplement series) is decent but not comparable to Blum or Hettich. The hinges are adequate for light daily use but loosen over time with heavy use. Custom wardrobes using moisture-resistant MDF and Blum hardware last 10-15 years with no degradation.

The smart hybrid approach: many of our clients use a mix. Custom wardrobes for the master bedroom and kids rooms (where quality matters daily). IKEA PAX for guest rooms and storage closets. This balances budget with daily experience.

One consideration specific to Dubai that the IKEA comparison guides written for European markets miss: resale and rental value. Dubai's property market treats built-in wardrobes as permanent fixtures. A custom wardrobe that fills the room precisely adds measurable value when you sell or rent the property. An IKEA PAX installation has no such effect. Agents and tenants see it as furniture, not a fixture, and it typically gets removed or left behind. If you own the property and plan to hold or sell it within 5 years, the custom option recovers a larger portion of its cost through improved property presentation.

What about IKEA PAXING a walk-in closet room? For a dedicated closet room conversion, IKEA PAX faces additional limitations. PAX frames are 201cm or 236cm tall, which leaves a 30-70cm gap to standard Dubai villa ceilings (270-280cm). This gap collects dust and makes the room look unfinished. Custom joinery fills the room floor-to-ceiling with no gap. If you are converting a spare room into a walk-in closet, the cost difference between PAX and a basic custom fit-out (approximately AED 3,000-5,000 on a 10-12 sqm room) is justified by the result: a room that looks designed rather than assembled. See our full walk-in closet Dubai guide for room conversion details.

How do the internal organisation accessories compare? IKEA's Komplement range offers good-value accessories: pull-out trousers racks, shoe shelves, drawer inserts, and soft-close hinges. For a budget PAX installation in a guest room or second bedroom, Komplement accessories are adequate. For a master bedroom or walk-in closet where you use the wardrobe twice daily, the quality difference matters. Blum drawer slides rated for 30kg vs Komplement rated for 15-20kg. Blum soft-close hinges rated for 60,000-100,000 cycles vs Komplement rated for approximately 30,000. Over 5 years of daily use, Komplement accessories loosen and eventually fail; Blum hardware does not.

Five-year total cost comparison: a 3-linear-meter IKEA PAX with Komplement accessories, delivery (approximately AED 300-500), and professional assembly (AED 400-600) totals AED 6,000-10,000. Within 5 years you will likely replace at least one door, some hinges, and possibly a frame due to humidity damage, adding AED 1,500-3,000. Five-year cost: AED 7,500-13,000. A custom melamine MDF wardrobe at AED 8,000-12,000 with Blum hardware requires no maintenance or replacement within 5 years. The total cost of ownership difference is smaller than the upfront gap suggests.
